A-Rod comes clean about "friendship" with Jeter |
| Today, Alex Rodriguez decided to stop all the "lying" and acknowledge that he and Jeter do not have the friendship they once did. Although he described them as having a good working relationship, he did mention that there has been a change in their relationship. Alex once criticized Jeter in a 2001 Esquire article by saying that he (Jeter) did not have to lead because he was surrounded with so much talent. Many believe this was a turning point in their friendship. So just to summarize, players have been at spring training for less than 24 hours and we already have one player who feels snubbed and is probably going to end his career instead of swallowing his pride, another player who has been and still can be a huge piece in the success of the team in the future who is talking about playing for Boston, and two of the greatest players to ever play the game who may have their panties in a bunch. Welcome to Yankees spring training! Labels: A-Rod, Egos, Jeter, Whiners |

Door quickly closing on Bernie's career |
| The clock is ticking for number 51. Players started reporting to Legends Field yesterday. They are scheduled to get physicals today and start working out tomorrow. Unfortunately, Bernie was nowhere to be found. Bernie Williams was offered a minor league spot and a chance to compete for a spot on the major league roster this year, but it is now believed by most of his teammates that he is going to turn it down. There is no formal deadline for him to report, but if he had intended to be on the same schedule as the rest of the team, he would be in Tampa today. I still believe that he deserves a shot. Why is it they need three first basemen in addition to utility infielders such as Miguel Cairo who could potentially play 1st base if needed, but they only have four outfielders? I know I've said it before, but .281 with 61 RBIs and 29 doubles is not exactly washed up. On the other hand, he would be helping his own case if he quit the apparent sulking and put his ego aside and just showed up to spring training and played ball. If he played well, the Yankees would be even more hard pressed to not include him on their roster. It's going to be a different team without Bernie around. Labels: Bernie, Pride, Roster |

Mo problems coming down the road? |
Mariano Rivera wearing a Red Sox uniform. If that's not enough to scare you silly, then you cannot call yourself a Yankee fan. But this is going to become a real possibility, according to Rivera, if the Yankees don't figure out how to solve his contract issues. It is fairly simple. Mariano wants a contract extension before his contract expires after this season. Brian Cashman has spoken to him and reiterates the fact that the team obviously wants to keep him. However, Cashman also stated that he does not want to negotiate contract extensions during the season and he does not want to make an exception even for the great Mariano Rivera, because then other players who wish to negotiate contract extensions during the season will be asking the obvious question, "If you can negotiate with Mariano during the season, why not me too?" Further complicating this whole issue is the fact that Mariano believes the Yankees are leaving Bernie Williams out to dry, and he may be worried about the same possibility for himself. While that might be a bit of a stretch to say the least, Mariano feels as if he is being disrespected. While I don't think there is a possibility of Mariano playing for any other team next year other than the Yankees, I certainly hope that things don't get nasty behind closed doors. This is a mess that doesn't need to happen.
Some other notable recent events:
Roger Clemens is thinking about staying retired. No big loss there. It's not like the Yanks are lacking starting pitching these days. In fact, there is talk of trading Pavano if he can prove he is healthy and strong as they will then have an abundance of arms. So without an opening in the rotation, I don't see the point in bringing back an old, once-great pitcher on the sole value of his name rather than his ability to pitch. The sooner he retires, the sooner he can get elected to the Hall of Fame.
The future George Steinbrenner is not impressive so far. Steinbrenner's son-in-law and designated successor Steve Swindal, who is also the Yankees general partner, was arrested Thursday morning on charges of driving under the influence in Tampa. One thing I have always loved about King George is that while he demanded discipline, focus and absolute dedication from each of his players, you sort of got the impression those were the qualities that he took with him in life. This is how he attacked his career and how he approached life. Let's hope this is an isolated incident and not a reflection of Swindal or a sign of things to come.Labels: Clemens, Contract negotiations, Rivera, Swindall |

Self-fulfilling prophecy |
| It is almost a given that the media scrutiny of Alex Rodriguez is going to go from heavy to obnoxious in 2007. In fact, it's already started. I can see him at some point this season going 0 for 4 for the night and breaking a 15-game hit streak, and the next day's headlines on the New York Times questioning if he will survive his new slump. The problem is this: As the media continues to dish out more and more and more gossip, speculation and general nonsense about him in order to justify its own miserable existence, actual pressure on Alex will continue to build and sooner or later, he will succumb. I hate to say it, but barring a near perfect first few months for him and/or some other scandal, drama or attention magnet to provide cover, Alex is going to have a tough ride. Who knows? Maybe MLB will finally have the guts to investigate Barry. Labels: A-Rod, Media |

RIP Hank Bauer |
| Former Yankee all-star right-fielder and Marine war hero Hank Bauer died of cancer yesterday at the age of 84. Bauer had a tough life from the beginning, which probably did much to shape his hard-nosed attitude. Growing up, his father lost his leg working in an aluminum mill who worked bartender. Because his family did not have much money, young Hank was forced to wear clothes made out of old feed sacks. He was an athlete, playing baseball and basketball in high school. He was once elbowed by an opponent and his nose became permanently damaged. After graduation, he took a job repairing furnaces in a beer-bottling factory where he worked until his brother, Herman, who was a minor league baseball player in the White Sox farm system, managed to get him a tryout which resulted in a contract with Oshkosh in the Class D Wisconsin state league. One month after Pearl Harbor, Bauer enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific where he contracted Malaria. But he recovered. And he recovered enough to win 11 campaign ribbons, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. His second Purple Heart was earned when he was commanding a platoon of 64 men in a battle where only 6 survived. He was one of them. He did, however, get hit by shrapnel, which was what sent him home for good. He went home to East St. Louis where he joined the local pipe fitters union. One day after work, he stopped by a local bar and ran into a scout for the Yankees. He signed a $175-a-month contract to play minor league ball in their minor league system. He went on to play 11 seasons with the Bombers, during which they won 7 World Series. It is said that he was one of Casey Stengel's favorites, he never made mental mistakes and had a fierce determination to win. He would reportedly snarl "Don't mess with my money!" at teammates who wouldn't hustle. He exuded authority and his face was likened to a "clenched fist". He once posted a 17-game World Series hitting streak which has since only been equaled by Derek Jeter. He was a three time All-Star, and was traded to the Kansas City Athletics in 1960 for some guy named Roger Maris. He went on to manage the Orioles and led them to a World Series championship in 1966. His wife of 50 years, Charlene Friede, died in 1999. Bauer died yesterday in his Kansas City area home. Labels: Heroes |

Three more in pinstripes |
It is becoming increasingly likely that there will be three more players wearing pinstripes next year who, up until recent weeks and months, doubts as to each of their futures was prevalent. Starting from most likely to appear in pinstripes and working down, they are:
Carl Pavano - Despite efforts by Cahsman, it apparently has not been easy to trade him. I'm sure other teams are not willing to take on the entire $10 mil/year owed to him, and are barely willing to give anyone in return. At this point, I'm thinking it's better to just give him his fair share of starts and see what he can do. As a #5 starter, he doesn't have to win 80% of his games. I'm thinking if the guy can post an ERA around 4.50, he'll probably win 55% of his games with the Yankee bats backing him up, and that would be great for a #5. One thing is for sure - he will be facing a lot of boos when he first steps up on the mound and will have to earn back the respect of the fans and his teammates if he is to remain in the Bronx.
Roger Clemens - Plain and simple, Roger wants to pitch again. And if Roger wants to pitch, it is safe to say that Roger will pitch. There will be no shortage of teams willing to sign him, so it then becomes a matter of where does Roger want to pitch? Being a competitor, it is no surprise that he wants to pitch in the postseason. Furthermore, he doesn't just want to make the playoffs, he wants a ring. While the Yanks are certainly experts in making the playoffs, recent years have proven they are anything but a lock for another ring. However, I'd still say the chances he will be in pinstripes ate better than 50-50.
Bernie - The Yanks have invited Bernie to spring training and have officially offered him a minor league contract. Although there was speculation that he may turn down the offer and consider it an insult, he is reportedly seriously considering the offer. While there is disagreement as to whether or not the Yanks should sign him, there is not one Yankee fan alive who doesn't want to see him have a spectacular year and earn a spot in the outfield. What Yankee fan wouldn't want to see #51 have a couple of big hits in the 2007 postseason?Labels: Bernie, Clemens, Pavano |
