The kids pick up some slack |
| With CC and Wang getting hit hard so far this season, and even AJ giving up 8 runs during his last start against Boston, the Yankees had to look to their youth for some help. Following yesterday's solid outing by Phil Hughes (6 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 0 R), the New York enjoyed watching Joba post some equally impressive numbers (7 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 R) of his own. Matt Holiday would consider playing in New York |
It's very premature to begin any serious talks about trades for big name players, but it's not a stretch to point out the fact that the Yankees outfield is weak. Granted Nick Swisher has surpassed expectations. By season's end, he may prove to be a solid guy in the field as well as in the plate. Xavier Nady might post some decent numbers if he can return from the DL with no further issues. However, after those two, the performance drops off significantly. Brett Gardner has amazing speed and good plate discipline. Along with an accurate arm of average strength, he has a lot of potential. However, he's yet to prove he can hit at a major league level. Admittedly, he has not had enough time to develop yet. However, he won't survive until he can hit better than sub .250. Melky Cabrera doesn't appear to be able to grow past hitting for moderate average and minimal power. Johnny Damon is 35 and is not getting any older. His weak arm is a liability. Hideki Matsui's 4-year $52 million contract will expire after the 2009 season. So far, he has played in approximately half the games in the first three years of this contract. He's still struggling with his knee having surgery, and this season he appears to be relegated to DH duties when he does play. These are not the pieces that come together to make a strong outfield, either on the field or at the plate.
This is why the idea of Matt Holiday is intriguing. The 29-year-old left fielder has a .318 average and 128 homers in about 5 years of professional service. Defensively, his range is good and his overall fielding has been dramatically improving. Light at the end of a longer tunnel |
| The Milwaukee Brewers activated Trevor Hoffman from the DL today, who will no doubt help their struggling bullpen. But what does this have to do with the Yankees you ask? At the moment, Mariano Rivera is #2 on the all-time saves list, with 486. The one person ahead of him on this list is - you guessed it - Trevor Hoffman, with 554 career saves. Despite posting 30 saves in 2008, the 41-year-old Hoffman was released by the Padres after the end of the season and was signed by Milwaukee for $6 million for one year. So the game of catch-up continues, but Hoffman will be making Mariano's goal of becoming the statistical all-time saves leader more difficult by the day. Mo is 39-years old and is currently signed through the 2010 season. Assuming Mo does not make up the difference (he must collect 68 more saves than Hoffman) over the next two years, the Yankees will be faced with a possible problem: Do they sign Mo for 2011 if he is within striking distance but is not the same old Mariano he always was before? Pitching woes |
| The Yanks followed up Friday night's embarrassing collapse with another disaster last night. AJ Burnett went from virtually unhittable to out-of-control at some point while sitting on the bench during the top of the 4th inning. Burnett had been the one bright spot in the starting rotation before yesterday's game, but now there is not one starter who has been consistently good since the beginning of the season. As if there was not already enough strain on pitching, Brian Bruney was placed on the DL for two weeks. He believes his elbow strain might be due to too much throwing in the bullpen in between appearances. Since Wang is on the DL, he will be replaced by Phil Hughes, who is 3 - 0 with a 1.86 ERA in three starts at Scranton/Wilkes Barre. In 19 1/3 innings, he has struck out 19 and walked only 3. Injury updates: Wang, Ransom, Bruney, A-Rod |
Today, Chien-Ming Wang joined A-Rod and Nady on the DL after being demolished in all three of his starts so far this season and pitching an extended spring training game down in Tampa on Thursday. He has been diagnosed with weakness in the abductor muscles of both hips and is expected to go through 10 - 14 days of physical therapy. When asked what happens after that, Brian Cashman answered the question with another question: Who knows?
A-Rod is still down in Tampa recovering from hip surgery and if the recent text messages he has been sending are worth anything, he is well on his way to recovery. He is still scheduled to return to the major league roster on May 15, and could begin playing live minor league games as soon as a week from now. In the meantime, the Yanks will have to find another replacement for him until he returns. Cody Ransom hurt his right quad last night while attempting to steal second and will be put on the 15-day disabled list.

Don't blame Mo |
I think many people will be inclined to blame Mo for the absolute embarrassment and disaster which occurred last night, but many people would be wrong.
Mariano Rivera is not perfect, nor should he be expected to be. His ERA was 0.00 before last night's game and he has already saved 4 games a little more than 2 weeks into the season. Even after giving up the 2-run blast to Jason Bay, his ERA is still only 2.16. You could blame Marte. He gave up one run in 1.1 innings and his ERA is 15.43 so far this season. He has not been stellar. But anyone who points their finger anywhere besides the starting lineup is kidding themselves.
The bats are simply not getting the job done. They certainly didn't last night. In the top of the 7th inning, the New York had a 3 -2 lead with the bases loaded and no outs. How many runs could they muster? One. With the bases loaded and no outs, even two well-placed outs could score two runs. They didn't even need a clutch hit...just two well-placed outs. But the most expensive lineup in major league baseball managed to only score one run. They had the chance to put Boston on the ropes and failed. But the disappointment doesn't end there....
In the top of the 9th inning, with a 4-2 lead, the Yanks had bases loaded and no outs. With Mariano warming up, they were on the verge of closing the door on the game. They could smell victory. Again, they could have scored two runs with two well-placed outs. Could they even muster one this time? Nope. Cano grounds into a double play (including getting the runner from 3rd trying to score) and Melky strikes out. Sad.
