Playing like Yankees |
Tonight the Yanks played like you'd expect them to play - they manhandled a clearly inferior team. If this was the Yankees of only two weeks ago, their bats would have struggled against sub-par pitching and their pitchers would have been knocked around. But CC Sabathia cruised through 7 innings to his fourth win and the offense exploded in the 7th inning for 7 runs. With their 7th run in a row, they moved to 5 games over .500. Adding to the good news is the return of Brian Bruney from the DL. He threw an inning (15 pitches, 10 strikes, 0 hits, 0 walks, 1 K) and will be a welcome addition to the bullpen.
Finally, for anyone keeping track, since the Carlos Gomez incident on Friday night, Teixeira is 8 for 16, with 6 runs, 11 RBI, 3 hr and 2 BB. Not a bad streak.Labels: Bruney, CC, Teixeira, Winning |

The kids pick up some slack |
| With CC and Wang getting hit hard so far this season, and even AJ giving up 8 runs during his last start against Boston, the Yankees had to look to their youth for some help. Following yesterday's solid outing by Phil Hughes (6 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 0 R), the New York enjoyed watching Joba post some equally impressive numbers (7 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 R) of his own. Two for 2009 |
Despite the fact that some in the media that are only too happy to prematurely proclaim that the Yanks streak of 13 straight years of making the playoffs is over, it's still a little early to be speculating about 2009 yet. Having said that, here are two players that will most likely be free agents and, despite their likely high salary demands, I believe the Yanks would be very wise to take a good shot at each:
1. F-Rod - The 26-year old closer has been consistently dominant for Anaheim over his first 5 seasons in the majors. If you ignore the stingy 3.04 ERA he posted in his first full season in 2003, he has been under 3.00 for his entire career. He's averaged 45 saves over the last 4 years, with an average of more than one K/IP and a WHIP of about 1. He has proven that he can beat AL batters and deal with the pressure of the post season, and there's no reason to believe he will be a problem off the field or have problems. There really are only two questions as I see it: First, where do you put him? Will he be willing to be a set-up man for Mo until he retires, which is at least until 2010, if not longer. After that, he would probably be guaranteed the closer job for the Yanks for another ten years if it worked out. The second question, as it is with any player coming into NY, is can he handle the pressure unique to NY (i.e. the media, the fans, management, other players, etc...) This is a question that can never really be answered until a player arrives, but he shows no signs of immaturity, selfishness or an inability to handle the press. Rodriguez wanted to work out an extension with Anaheim previously, but according to his most recent statements, frustration with their lack of action has led him to state that he will test the free agent market this offseason. Getting him as a free agent will be much less costly than having to trade for him. I say offer him $90 million over 6 years, which breaks down to $15 million/years. That puts him even with Mariano and gives him a $5 million/year increase from his 2008 salary.
2. CC Sabathia - The 28-year old lefty would be a great addition to the Yankees starting rotation. As much as you may like the sound of Chamberlain and Wang as 1-2 in the rotation, how about Chamberlain-Wang-Sabathia? He has a lifetime ERA of 3.74, but in recent years he has improved. He posted a 3.22 and a 3.21 for Cleveland in 2006 and 2007 respectively, and while he jumped to 3.83 with Cleveland in early 2008, after being traded to Milwaukee, he has gone 7 and 0 with a 1.55 ERA in 8 games. Like F-Rod, he also brings experience facing AL batters, so that should not be a concern. However, there is also the question of the unique challenges of facing the pressure of playing in New York. There is speculation that Milwaukee will not be able to re-sign him, so he will likely be available for the right price and not as a trade, which of course saves prospects. I think he commands numbers in the same ballpark as F-Rod in terms of salary and contract length. I'm thinking the offer should be at least 6 years/$80 million.Labels: Acquisitions, CC, F-Rod |
